Ignorance as a Factor

When one is faced with the task to change, they may find it frightening as it's a new experience to them. This can result in the them pushing the experience away from them, and cause them to become ignorant. Some countries are so censored or filled with propaganda they don't know what is the truth. In North Korea, their media is heavily restricted. One cannot look up videos or even check their mail without the government watching their every move. They are also hit with large amounts of propaganda and not able to really even think for themselves. In the United States, it's a democracy so the citizens are able to freely use their media and resources for their benefit. However, the government in N. Korea decides all aspects of this, by essentially brainwashing their citizens with constant propaganda. This causes the citizens to worship their leaders as gods and believe the westerners to be the sworn enemy. This causes them to be ignorant and not wish for the change they most definitely need. In Oedipus Rex, by Sophocles, the main character Oedipus pushes away help from his subjects as he does not want to accept the truth. His mind is clouded by the horrible deeds he has done and wishes them all to be untrue. When he finally accepts the truth he curses the gods for his horrible fate, “My god, my god – what do you plan to do to me? Oh Zeus, what have you done? What have you planned for me?” (Sophocles 13). He was unable to face the truth and when he does, he reaches a stage of enlightenment and moves on with his life. If the North Koreans are moved away from their path to freedom, they can become enlightened in a sense as well.
